University of South Brittany : IRDL & Archipel

In order to meet the current and future scientific and technological challenges related to materials, mechanical and systems engineering, the Laboratoire d'Ingénierie des MATériaux de Bretagne (LIMATB EA 4250) of UBS & UBO and the Laboratoire Brestois de Mécanique et des Systèmes (LBMS EA 4325) common to ENSTA Bretagne, UBO & ENIB have federated their research and training through research activities to form the Dupuy de Lôme Research Institute (IRDL) on 1 January 2016. It became a CNRS unit in 2018 (UMR CNRS 6027). It aims to develop work in marine engineering and maintain its position as a laboratory of excellence in this field.

The laboratory's staff and resources are spread over five sites: two main sites in Lorient and Brest and satellite sites located in Vannes, Pontivy. 

The Dupuy de Lôme Research Institute has a staff of around 300 researchers and administrative and technical employees and is structured into five Thematic Research Poles (PTR): i. Composites, nanocomposites, biocomposites; ii. Multi-material assemblies, iii. Structures, fluids and interactions, iv. Energy Systems and v. Thermal Processes and Sustainability and Behaviour of Materials.

Archipel was created in 2019, in order to promote this maritime and coastal identity of UBS, to bring together UBS players and develop multidisciplinary approaches, to develop the collaborations with economic, institutional and NGO stakeholders, to develop forward-looking approaches and innovation in the face of economic and environmental challenges linked to the sea and the coastal.

Boating and offshore racing is one of the axes of work in Archipel. With an objective in particular to contribute to projects aiming at better understanding and evaluating the environmental impacts related to nautical activities and leisure boats, and at developing solutions and innovations to try reduce these impacts. Bretagne Développement Innovation 

Bretagne Développement Innovation (BDI) is the regional development and innovation agency of Brittany. Funded by the Regional Council. BDI’s main mission is to contribute to the regional economic development, by supporting and accelerating the major economic transitions taking place on the territory. Its activity focuses on innovative sectors with high growth potential and a strong capacity to create new jobs.  Among the innovative sectors, it supports breton companies operating in the competitive sailing and composites sector aiding innovation, internationalization, and diversification projects through the Eurolarge Innovation program.

BDI is also involved in the European network EEN through the EEN Ouest consortium. EEN promotes innovation and facilitates EU funds access for SMEs. Benefiting from the expertise and territorial knowledge of BDI, EEN Ouest is Brittany’s European point of entry for business and partnerships.

AudéLor - Lorient Technopole and Le Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique

AudéLor - Lorient Technopole supports innovative companies and project leaders in Lorient  and Western Morbihan.

Their missions are structured around two axes:

• The identification and support of development projects carried out locally: the project is supported in all its phases by strategic advice, project structuring and bringing together the network with appropriate skills (idea, targeting, design, development, implementation and industrialisation);
• The coordination of 5 structuring sectors by business experts: Agro-Sea & Agro-Land, Sailing & Materials, Digital & Electronics, Shipbuilding & Marine Energy, and Eco-Activities & Energy.

AudéLor - Lorient Technopole assists more than 110 innovation projects each year, raising around 2,2M€ per year.  It is a founding member of the association 7 Technopoles Bretagne that brings together 1021 members over the entire breton territory and supports each year the development of more than 80 new innovative companies. 

With a network of more than 350 actors gathering big companies, SMEs, higher education and research centres, Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique aims to contribute to the development of the maritime sector.

Today, Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique is:

• Initiator: it stimulates the maritime economy supporting the iinovation. With 359 innovative collaborative projects certified since 205, PMBA represents a launching ramp for maritime innovations. (figures sept. 2019)
• Facilitator: it helps the emergence and financing of innovative projects by networking the skills of companies and research laboratories.
• Catalyst: it supports the growth of SMEs in their R&D investment, access to markets for their new products and services, and their international development.
• Actor: it works for the recognition of the maritime sector in France and in Europe with the aim of the identification of the thematic areas in priority programmes, in order to position its members in emerging markets.

IAR, the French Bioeconomy cluster

IAR brings together more than 400 stakeholders from farmer cooperatives, research organisations and universities to VCs, start-ups, SMEs and large industries, including end-users, around a common goal: the optimal valorisation of renewable resources for food, feed, energetic and industrial applications. IAR’s activities focus on supporting the development of the bioeconomy in France and more specifically in the regions of Hauts-de-France and Grand Est.

To support its members, IAR developed several services supporting its members in all bio-based innovation development stages: IAR Projects - development of collaborative R&I projects; IAR Business Intelligence – monitoring, market and technological studies; IAR Invest – support in early stage funding; IAR Academy – getting access to the right competences; IAR International – developing business outside France and IAR Network – meeting with the bio-based community.
